Camping Fun

We returned late Wednesday afternoon from an exciting camping trip in Utica IL. We arrived on Sunday afternoon and set up camp at the Starved Rock campgrounds. Chris and Sami diligently worked to put up their tent and mom and dad worked on theirs. (the above photo is about as far as they got, mom with some help from dad finished.) After reading an article in Ranger Rick Chris and Sami were anxious to try Geocaching. So we combined that with hiking through some of Starved Rock and a park in nearby Oglesby, over the next couple of days. We never found either cache, but saw a beautiful waterfall and Sami got a nasty cut on her inner thigh. She slipped while climbing over a fallen tree.
The kids enjoyed exploring the gully behind our campsite and making S'mores. We were sad to leave, but DJ had to get back to help his friend Rich move on Thursday and Sami had an appointment with her orthopedic doctor on Thursday.

He declared her well healed and she is ecstatic to be biking again. She is anxious to start back at gymnastics but has to wait a week for the fall session to start.

Chris is now a black belt recommended in Tae Kwon Do. If he passes his next test in about two months he will be a full black belt. We are very proud of him.

More from way out west

Me again! Brandon and I (ok, mostly Brandon) managed to get the painting done over the weekend, which means 1) we've officially re-painted every room in our house since moving in, 2) we can finally put up baby gates on the stairs - and just in time since Gavin is now climbing them, and 3) an LCD TV is in our near future. We have no business buying a TV when we've got all this other stuff to spend our dough on, but thanks to Best Buy's good-ol'-American 3-year, 0% interest deal it won't be so painful. And speaking of that other stuff, we're flying our plumber friend Pete Smith up here on Friday to help us replace the tub and associated plumbing. Pete seems to think we'll be able to accomplish not just the tub replacement but replumbing the whole house with new "PEX" pipe in that amount of time. I'll be glad just to be able to take a shower again (we've been showering at the neighbors'). Anything beyond that is gravy.

Just for fun

So Brandon and I were talking about little Peanut the other night and he seems to think said belly-dweller is a boy while I'm pretty sure she's a girl. We haven't made any formal bets yet, but it might be fun to hear what the rest of you are thinking.

I haven't posted in awhile so here's an update from Hyrum....

We bought a 2004 Tacoma 4-door pickup a few weeks ago. Its no fun having a car payment again, but its nice having a newer vehicle. We're still trying to sell our 1998 Pathfinder (they only wanted to give us a pittance for it as a trade-in). Unfortunately it seems nobody wants to buy an SUV right now.

I had jury duty for 3 days a couple of weeks ago and I actually liked it. It was a rape trial involving 16- to 22-year-old kids. I know they're not really kids anymore at that age but they seemed like kids to me. I could fill pages and pages telling you about it but just know that it was really interesting and I don't regret getting picked one bit.

We hired (!) painters to finish up the prep work (a bunch of sanding and caulking) and to apply the primer to our stairwell and TV room (the area at the top of the stairs). Brandon and I have been working in dribs and drabs on remodeling that area for the past several months but kinda got burned out. Its ready to paint - I just need to pick out the color(s). The reward at the end is that we get to buy one of them newfangled LCD TVs for football season. And speaking of football season, would any you be interested in joining Brandon's fantasy league? If so let him know ASAP.

Since we're spending so much on new vehicles and painters it was inevitable that the plumbing in our bathroom would decide to finally get plugged up beyond our ability to unplug it. A plumber came today and gave us a $500 estimate for replacing the "illegal" pipes, so we're now thinking that this would be a good time to go ahead and replace the old cruddy tub altogether. As you might imagine from all this, our plans to buy land are on hold for a little while since our land fund is being ransacked left and right. And who needs land anyway when you've got an LCD TV?

I'm bummed that we didn't get to come to Sami's birthday party and that I missed the baby shower. I love seeing pictures from family events, so don't be shy about sharing them if you've got them!

Love to you all....

no particular title...

Here's the long lost Mom, especially to you, Julie. At least I saw Michele, Melissa and David today. Our last 2 weeks have been busy, so I'll try to fill you in....

We left for Minnesota on Wednesday July 30th. We were a bit nervous and disoriented for the first day or two, but the rebuilt transmission and the new torque converter performed well and we eventually relaxed and enjoyed ourselves. Friday was probably the most fun. We visited several of the state parks along the eastbound shore of Lake Superior and did some hiking to some pretty unique waterfalls. We stopped and turned around at the Canadian border, and then headed back toward Duluth. We got there at dinnertime and stopped to see some tall ships that were there for a special waterfront festival. We walked a lot around the harbor, had some dinner, walked some more, and then they entertained us with a fireworks display. We spent the night in the PW in the convention center parking lot, and then on Saturday morning we headed for Milaca. It was Pop's first ever visit to the Harris ranch. We spent a couple of hours there with Bob, Mary Ann and Julie, and then we drove to Zimmerman to see Mike, Megan, Anthony and Henry. We also met Mary's husband Joseph, who was there helping Mike finish the sheet rock in his garage. From there we drove to Elk River, and the Purtle's new home, which is more of a "ranch" than the Harris ranch. Pretty nice place. We visited their horses, a few other horses that are boarded there, and Jack's pony. They had a cookout for us, and Rob's family, Mike's family, and Kathy's family were all there. We spent the night in their driveway, and then on Sunday we drove to see Kathy and Jake's town home in Ramsey, and then to Rob and Lisa's new house in Blaine. We spent the rest of Sunday there, and went to watch Rob play softball. Theresa came with her 3 kids, and we also saw Margaret and Jeyson there. All in all, we saw a everyone except James and Ana Purtle, who were elsewhere because they thought we weren't coming. We spent Sunday night in the PW in front of Rob's house, then left on Monday morning. We took 2 days to come home because we took the slow roads along the St. Croix and Mississippi Rivers. Monday night we were in Iowa at Pike's Peak State Park, high on a bluff where the Wisconsin River joins the Mississippi. We missed the storms that came raging through the Chicago area Monday night, but we saw some of the damage caused by trees and power lines being blown over. I understand that The North Aurora folks lost power that night, but Michele didn't mind because the kids went to bed out of sheer boredom. The Devonshire also lost power, but they have a supplemental generator that keeps the basics going, like a few lights and the elevators. We got home late Tuesday afternoon to a very hot house. Wednesday was devoted to unpacking, laundry, Gram, and general catch-up and garden stuff. I worked all day Thursday and all day Friday. Saturday I shopped for Gram, and then went to Dawn Hach Lawler's baby shower. I even stopped to visit Aunt Ginny and Wally on the way home. Today I worked 5-10:30 and then we picked up Gram and Linda and went to Sami's very fun "Dora the Explorer" party. Poor Michele had the whole job to do by herself, because D.J. was in Las Vegas where he's been hanging out since last Sunday. He was due back home later this evening, and we were all sorry to have missed seeing him today. I believe that the party clean up detail will be awaiting him. All the food was delicious, and I know 4 people who will be eating a lot of sandwiches this week. Melissa and Dave, I'm glad you could make it to the party. Melissa, you're looking a whole lot more pregnant than you did only 2 weeks ago. I hope the next month goes very smoothly for you. Gram and Linda also attended Sami's party and had a fine time. It was Gram's first outing in a long time, with the exception of going to the doctor or the dentist.

Pop continues to work on his new landscape, transplanting perennials from here and there and purchasing a few other plants and shrubs.

The Bailey Road bridge is finally open again. I have yet to drive over it, but Pop has tested it.

Julie, I tried to return your call on Saturday, but you must have been out of range. I hope you had a fun weekend in the Uintas. We continue to devour Gavin's blog, and I even showed Wally how to access it. He has a very old, very slow computer, and no speakers, but he and Aunt Ginny enjoyed watching Gavin do the "Worm."

Pop has accused me of writing a book, so I'll end this before it gets so long that nobody wants to read it. I'm going to watch the Cubs alternatety with the Olympics and no doubt fall asleep on the loveseat. Hugs and kisses to you all!

Just a quick note letting you know the ultrasound went very well. Peanut is head down, very low and ready to go. No wonder I was measuring small. :) According to the ultrasound measurements, the little one is 6lbs, 5oz!!! and is due Sept. 1st. We'll see. I packed my delivery bag today, so that's done with. Dave and I are going video camera and dishwasher shopping on Sat. We hope to find some shelves too.

That's all for now...

We're coming along...

Here's the progress of little Peanut's room. Dave picked out the crib and dresser. He loved the spindles.

My Mom and I had so much fun of Friday. We washed the bedding and clothes. Then sorted the clothes by size and filled the dresser drawers. I was a great day!

The ultrasound is tomorrow. Say a little prayer for little P. I'll keep you posted.

Love,
Melissa
