Sami's Seven

Sami announced two months ago that she was going to have a roller skating party for her birthday and she just kept right on announcing it, until it became a reality. The roller rink down the road, hosts birthday parties so we booked her party there. I figured that I was getting off easy, no house to clean, no games to plan, no kids running around my house. Then, Sami decided that since we haven't made a birthday cake since her Care Bear pary, when she turned three, we should make the cake. One cake turned into two, a plain butterfly cake and a chocolate Dora the Explorer cake. Two became three when the first Dora cake didn't unmold. Turns out, unmolding the cakes was the easy part. After two and a half hours we had a presentable purple butterfly. Four and a half hours later we had a cake that resembled Dora. Given that I had never decorated a cake before I was pleased with the results.

Sami had a blast at the party. We had twelve children, most of whom had never skated before. It was so cute to see these little girls holding tight to one another, hugging the walls, bravely making their way around the rink. By the end, most were doing really well. Sami's boyfriend, the four year old down the street, came and after lots of cajoling went out with his mom. Sami, who had lessons this past winter, was a great hostess encouraging her friends, and telling them to stomp, stomp, roll.

Cousin Kathleen came over that night for a sleep over. They settled down around ten and were up at six. I guess they wanted to take full advantage of the longest day of the year. They were kind enough to sit and watch television. We met her parents at church and she went home with them. Two hours later we were there to celebrate Father's Day. I don't think Sami could have asked for a better birthday weekend.

I'm incredibly impressed with the two cakes! It sound like it was a wonderful time and I'm ever so happy for Sami, whose Nana didn't even get a card in the mail to her. These "shingles" are the worst think that's ever afflicted me, but I'm starting to get some relief from the sharp nerve pain with a new medicine that Dr. Kurt prescribed yesterday.

What beautiful cake decorating skills you have. I'm glad Sami enjoyed her bday party. I always liked skating parties when I was a kid.

Way to go on the cakes!! Sounds like a really great birthday for Sami. I too remember loving rollerskating when I was a kid. Do they still have rinks with wooden plank floors and do they still have roller skates or is it all vinyl flooring and roller blades now? Having your party away from home is sheer genius.
