I just talked to Gram. She's back home and is very glad to be there. Her knee is giving her trouble now (or maybe it always was but the rest of her leg hurt so bad she couldn't tell) so she's resting and taking her pain meds as needed. She's looking forward to having a cocktail this evening with her friend Therese. She pointed out to me that she hasn't had a drink since December 21st. More power to her - she's earned one!

This is Mom, posting under Pop's name. Actually, Gram had a drink on December 24th, but she was really not well enough for her to remember. That was the night she came home from the hospital, then went back on Christmas morning in an ambulance. I'm certainly fearful that she's not ready to be home yet. The pain behind her right knee is troubling to me, since it's a new one. There appears to be swelling there as well. I hope it's not the start of more hemorrhaging. I really think she needs a caretaker, at least part of the time. Help! I'm drowning in negativity!
It's great to her Gram is back home. I, too, think she could benefit from some help. Some is better than none, esp. until she gets back into the swing of things. She really shouldn't be drinking while taking pain meds. Alcohol significantly enhances the effects of pain meds, which could ultimately compromise Gram's safety.
I think, Melissa, that you are just the right one to convince her not to drink.
BE CAREFUL!!!!!
Good point about mixing meds and alcohol. And GOOD LUCK trying to convince Gram she can't have her afternoon highball!
Actually, I spoke with her this afternoon and she said that she isn't going to take the pain meds until bedtime. She had one this morning, so I know that she knows not to mix the two. So far so good....
She's 92. Let her enjoy. She's made it this long; a high ball in the afternoon and a pain pill in the evening might not be so bad. No offense to the medical minded, (or well intended educated folk) if it makes her feel good, right on Gram. Whatever works for her. You know? I'm sure she's not going to abuse the system. We've all been there and know that we do what we do.
